Eight Refocusing Questions For Churches

Eight Refocusing Questions For Churches

by PreachIt Team

Every church, no matter how vibrant or established, must periodically refocus to ensure it remains aligned with God’s purpose and direction. Refocusing is not just about tweaking programs or adjusting services; it’s about diving deep into the heart of the ministry to realign with God’s will. These eight strategic questions will help your church evaluate its current state and future direction.

1. Why Do We Exist as a Church? (Biblical Purpose)

The foundational question for any church is understanding its biblical purpose. Why did God establish your church in your community? This question requires a return to Scripture to discern the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) and the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-39) as the core reasons for your existence. Reflecting on this will help your church stay grounded in its primary calling: to love God, love people, and make disciples.

2. How Has God Worked in Our Past? (Ministry Milestones)

Reflecting on how God has moved in your church’s history is crucial. Identify the key moments and milestones where God’s hand was evident. This could be a powerful revival, a significant community outreach, or a time of overcoming challenges. These milestones not only serve as reminders of God’s faithfulness but also help you understand how He has uniquely shaped your church’s journey.

3. Whom Has God Called Us to Reach? (Ministry Focus)

Every church has a unique calling to reach specific people. Who are the lost, broken, and seeking individuals God has placed in your church’s path? Is it young families, the elderly, a specific ethnic community, or perhaps those struggling with addiction? Clarifying your ministry focus helps align your outreach efforts with those God has called you to serve. As Paul said, “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22).

4. Who Has God Shaped Us to Be? (Core Values)

Core values are the principles that define your church’s identity. They are the non-negotiable beliefs and behaviors that guide your church’s decisions and actions. Identifying and articulating these values ensures consistency in ministry and helps your congregation understand what it means to be a part of your church family. Consider values like worship, community, service, and spiritual growth as you reflect on this question.

5. Where Is God Leading Us in the Future? (Vision)

Vision is about looking forward with faith. Where is God calling your church in the next season? This question is about discerning God’s future plans and being open to the new things He wants to do through your congregation. It’s about catching a glimpse of what God desires your church to become and do in the years to come. Proverbs 29:18 reminds us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

6. Which Model Most Facilitates Our Vision? (Ministry Model)

Different churches use different ministry models, whether it’s a traditional, cell group, or missional model. The question here is which model best facilitates the vision God has given your church. Your ministry model should support your vision, enabling you to reach your community effectively and make disciples according to your church’s unique context and calling.

7. How Will We Accomplish Our Vision? (Goals)

Once you have a clear vision, the next step is to set tangible goals. These goals should be SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Setting goals gives your church a clear roadmap to follow as you work toward fulfilling the vision God has placed on your heart. Remember, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17).

8. What Is Our Plan for Ministry for the Next Five Years? (Ministry Plan)

With your goals in place, develop a comprehensive ministry plan for the next five years. This plan should outline the steps your church will take to achieve its goals, including timelines, resources needed, and who will be responsible for each step. This strategic plan ensures that your church stays on course, remains focused on its vision, and continues to grow in accordance with God’s will.

Refocusing on these questions regularly can help your church stay aligned with God’s purpose and vision. It’s not just about where you are now but where God is leading you. As your church prayerfully considers these questions, you’ll find renewed clarity and direction to fulfill the calling God has given you.
