If These Rocks Could Preach

If These Rocks Could Preach

In this sermon If These Rocks Could Preach, All of us are building memorials in one way or another. Consider this idea with me. The size of the memorial we build will be direct reflection of how valuable God is too us! Either way you put it someone was building a memorial to his or her love or lack thereof to God.

Why was the Lord always asking people to stack up rocks as memorials?” We find an answer in Deuteronomy 6 when the Lord spoke to Moses and said, Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. (Deuteonomy 6:12)

Just six verses earlier God had told Moses to teach the children of Israel that there was just one God and they were to worship that one God with all their being. Then God tells Moses about some dangers that would come when they entered into the Promised Land namely the fact that in the midst of God’s blessing it is easy to forget the source of the blessing- God.

So here is Joshua some 40 years later telling the people of Israel, “We need to build a memorial at this place so that when we pass by we will be reminded of the Lord who kept us in the wilderness and brought us over the Jordan.” Every time an Israelite would pass by that pile of 12 rocks near the Jordan River those rocks would preach a sermon.

Those rocks never uttered a real word but they preached a timeless message to every generation that passed by them. Every generation would pass by and the ROCKS WOULD BEGIN PREACHING…
