The question is why is Mary near the cross? Why would she stand by and allow the crowd to kill her son? Why not rise and defend Him? I think it was more than just her mothering instinct that kept her at the cross. After all that’s what any mother in this place would do if they knew their son was absolutely innocent but was being put to death anyway.
